The steps to STA success

Get in touch

Often in response to urgent need or spare budget capacity, support coordinators or participants reach out detailing duration of STA stay, ideal location/s, support needs, and activities.

Prompt proposal

We’ll draw up a proposal including the accommodation details, planned activities, and an all-inclusive daily budget.

Meet and greet

Once everything looks good ‘on paper’ (and time permitting) we’ll hook up a face-to-face meeting between the support worker and the participant to ensure they’ll make good travel companions.

Sign off on the stay-cation!

If all goes well, it’s time to get going. With an agreement in place, our support worker will collect the participant and their things and take them safely to their new home for the coming days or weeks.

FAQs

Short Term Accommodation, including respite, is support for when you need to live out of home for a short period.

Short-Term Accommodation (STA) offers a flexible option for NDIS participants needing temporary housing, often to give a participant’s usual carers some respite, ensuring informal care arrangements are sustainable. It can also be used to enable new experiences, opportunities for socialisation, and the development of life skills.

STA is finded on a per day basis, all inclusive of accommodation, travel, food, and activities. STA stays can be up to 14 days.

Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA) is designed for participants who need temporary housing while waiting for a long-term accommodation solution, such as Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). MTA provides stable housing, allowing participants to maintain their routine during the transition to permanent accommodation.

MTA funding covers the rental cost of accommodation only, not food, support workers, or anything else. MTA stays can be up to 90 days.

STA funding is generally allocated through your NDIS plan under the Core Supports budget, specifically within the “Assistance with Daily Life” category. It covers accommodation, personal care, meals, and activities during your stay. Usually, the NDIS funds up to 28 days of STA per year, and this funding can be used flexibly. For example, you may want to book STA for one weekend a month or in blocks of up to a fortnight at a time.

STA is funded on a per day basis, with the fixed price inclusive of all the funded costs — transport, accommodation, food, and activities agreed upon with your STA provider.

No, any capacity in your Core Supports budget can be used to fund Short Term Accommodation (STA).
The NDIS doesn’t allow funding holidays. That said, STA funding can be used for short stays in desirable locations if:
  • The stay is disability related, i.e. do you need support because of your disability?
  • The activity is supportive of goals identified in your NDIS Plan.
  • The activity aids your employment prospects or community participation.
  • It’s justifiable in your circumstances, and reasonably considered to be good value for money.
  • It replaces an unreasonable expectation of your informal support system (family and friends) to provide the support.
  • The NDIS is the most suitable body to fund the support versus another system.

The NDIS is committed to making sure all spending gets good value for money and is relevant to your specific NDIS Plan. Check out the NDIS guidelines on Short Term Accommodation for more information, or reach out if you have any questions.
